Job Summary

Under general supervision, this position plans, instructs, and supervises a variety of recreational programs, including youth sports, therapeutic activities, swimming, and enrichment classes.

  • Implements lesson plans and practice schedules for youth sports, enrichment classes, therapeutic recreation, and other recreational programs; instructs participants in program activities, ensuring each session is age-appropriate, safe, and enjoyable.


  • Supports inclusive programming by adapting activities and providing one-on-one assistance for participants with disabilities, as well as working directly with seniors in therapeutic recreation.


  • Fosters an inclusive, supportive, and positive environment, models sportsmanship, teamwork, and resilience.


  • Performs safety and maintenance checks on equipment and facilities, coordinates setup, cleanup, and inventory management as needed.


  • Acts as the primary on-site contact for participants, parents and/or guardians, keeping them informed about program goals, and participant progress.


  • Assesses participant skill levels, monitors progress and provides constructive feedback.



  • Ensures compliance with health, safety, and sanitation guidelines; responds to emergency situations, provides first aid, and completes required incident reports when necessary.


  • Assists in planning and executing events, such as swim meets, practices, and seasonal activities; organizes event logistics, prepares participants, and coordinates with staff and external agencies when applicable.


  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

The requirements listed below are representative of the education, experience, certification and/or licensure required. An equivalent combination of education and experience to perform the essential duties and meet the necessary employment standards may be considered.


Must be at least sixteen (16) years of age.


One (1) year of relevant experience teaching, coaching, or recreational programming is preferred.


Possession of or the ability to obtain a CPR and First Aid certification within thirty (30) days of hire.


Minimum, Additional Qualification – Swim Instructor and CARA Swim Coach


  • Current Swim Instruction certification is required.


Minimum, Additional Qualifications –Youth Sports Coach


  • Completion of concussion recognition training within ninety (90) days of hire and the ability to renew annually.


Minimum, Additional Qualifications – Youth Programs Instructor


  • Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

  • Knowledge of relevant town, state, and federal laws, regulations, and policies.

  • Knowledge of coaching techniques, safety practices, and recreational programming.

  • Knowledge of municipal recreation principles and practices.

  • Knowledge of recreation center equipment and facilities.

  • Skill in verbal and written communication.

  • Skill in the use of computers and relevant software for communication and program management.

  • Skill in the supervision of program participants.

  • Ability to work effectively with diverse groups, including children, parents, and staff.

  • Ability to organize and teach program curriculum in a progression allowing learning and growth from program participants.

  • Ability to demonstrate and explain activities through verbal and physical instruction.

  • Ability to perform rescues, administer first aid, and remain attentive during aquatics activities.

  • Ability to provide a positive, enthusiastic customer service attitude towards all patrons.?

  • Ability to handle incidents and confrontations in a recreation facility.?

  • Ability to collaborate across a range of recreational programs and support the mission of the Division.

  • Ability to pass a pre-employment background check.

Tools & Equipment

Requires frequent use of general supplies and program and classroom equipment including but not limited to items such as arts and crafts materials, games, scoreboards, whistles, various sports gear and specialized equipment needed for therapeutic recreation and/or adaptive activities.


Physical Demands

Requires regular sitting, standing, walking, talking, handling, feeling or operating objects, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. Swim Coach and CARA Swim Coach requires regular swimming. Ice Skating Instructor requires regular ice skating. Requires occasional reaching with hands and arms, climbing and balancing. Requires moderate physical activity with heavy lifting, up to fifty (50) pounds. Requires close and distance vision acuity and the ability to adjust focus, allowing a broad field of vision. Requires hearing abilities necessary to maintain a safe, responsive environment, particularly in outdoor or noisy recreational settings.


Environment

Work is frequently performed in a climate-controlled environment or outdoors. Employees holding this position may be exposed to extreme cold or heat and wetness/humidity. The noise level is usually high and may range from moderate to extreme. The employee may occasionally work with or around hazardous items or hazardous conditions such as mechanical equipment, electrical equipment, chemicals, or radiant energy.

Hiring range: $19.10 - $20.88 Hourly
Full Range: $19.10-$24.20 Hourly

As a part-time Town of Parker employee, you have limited access to benefits which include: employee assistance program (EAP), one (1) hour of sick time accrued for every thirty (30) hours worked, and employee plus one (1) other member in your household a membership to the Parker Recreation Center and/or Fieldhouse.
