CONNECTING PEOPLE WITH NATURE COORDINATOR

PART-TIME, YEAR ROUND

OFFICE LOCATION : Camden, Maine, (based out of office with community work throughout our 16-town service region in Knox & Waldo Counties)

JOB TYPE : Hourly. 20 hours per week with option to 24 hours per week.

PAY RANGE : $20,000 – $22,500 per year

About Coastal Mountains Land Trust

We are a non-profit land conservation organization with the mission to permanently conserve land and connect people with nature in the western Penobscot Bay region of Maine. Since 1986, we have conserved more than 13,500 acres of land with 40 preserves and 70 conservation easements. We maintain over 55 miles of trail on our preserves for public use. Our community engagement program includes year-round free public programs and an active Learning Landscapes program that seeks to connect schools, teachers and students with nature throughout the 16 towns we serve. We have a year-round staff of 9 employees with several additional seasonal positions in summer.

Position Summary

  • The Connecting People with Nature Coordinator supports the Land Trust’s public programming by facilitating well-coordinated events for the public. This position helps deepen relationships with schools through representation of the Land Trust’s Learning Landscapes program, embracing the importance of everyday access to nature-based learning. This position uses listening to the needs of the community as a tool for providing equitable access to nature.
  • This position is highly collaborative, working with a dynamic team of full-time staff, seasonal staff, and volunteers to achieve the Land Trust’s goals. This position reports to the Connecting People with Nature Program Director.

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

PUBLIC PROGRAMS

  • Coordinate, publicize, and host assigned Land Trust nature programs, as assigned. These events seek to engage diverse leaders and audiences.
  • Support Land Trust year-round public programs, including, but not limited to, the Arts on the Hill concert series, the Blueberry Free Pick, and Kites and Ice Cream.

LEARNING LANDSCAPES

  • Deepen relationships with assigned public and private schools and early childhood centers in our service region, in support of providing access to nature through the Land Trust’s Learning Landscapes program.
  • Provide ecology programming for schools (early education through high school) through the design and implementation of engaging ecology hikes and the Land Trust’s emerging student stewards program.
  • Coordinate the Learning Landscapes Volunteer Program, collaborating with local schools/ early education centers to train volunteers in support of outdoor learning.
  • Coordinate outdoor learning educator gatherings (generally 2-3 per school year) to expand a network of support and shared resources among schools and outdoor organizations in our community.
  • Support Land Trust Outdoor Learning Retreats, which provides outdoor learning professional development opportunities and resources for educators usually in July or August.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by supervisor or Executive Director.

Desired Qualifications

  • Commitment to the mission of the Land Trust
  • Experience working with educators, administrators, volunteers, students, and families in a school and/or community-based setting
  • Willingness to complete background checks for work in schools and with community programs.
  • Ability to organize and host events, while being a positive and accommodating representative of the Land Trust.
  • Willingness to serve as an ambassador for the organization in the community and work effectively, and maintain positive, long-term working relationships, with all kinds of people, including educators, school administrators, board members, staff, volunteers, community partners, the public, and donors
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Articulate and possess excellent interpersonal skills featuring tact, patience, diplomacy, flexibility, and helpfulness.
  • Strong organization, problem-solving and multi-tasking skills with attention to detail and deadlines
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team within a small office environment
  • Ability to perform outdoor work in all weather conditions and to lift heavy objects (over 50 lbs.), and other physical capabilities that may be needed in order to complete work responsibilities.
  • Proficiency with basic computer systems; Microsoft Office suite, email, Google Drive.
  • Flexibility and willingness to occasionally work nights, weekends, and long days.
  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s or Professional experience commensurate with the needs of the position
  • A valid vehicle driver’s license and use of personal vehicle with proof of insurance
